Philosopher Philippe Lemoine describes Heidegger, half-jokingly, as “The only man about whom one can truly say that being a Nazi was the least of his sins.” However, even if you do separate Heidegger’s politics from his philosophy, he may have bigger problems. Especially around 1927 when this book was published. It’s not clear how much Heidegger’s politics influence his writing. ![]() Of what was written, the second division is so muddled, that even after taking a companion class with dozens of hours of lectures, I still have no idea how to make sense of it. The reasons not to read Being and Time are obvious. This post is my attempt to reconcile those two beliefs. It’s also one of the most interesting and thought-provoking books I’ve read in the last decade. There were plenty of entertaining examples and anecdotes to make meta-concepts tangible. The book was fascinating and covered a complicated topic well. Once I got into it, the book was a fascinating read – providing plenty of “hey sweetie, you won’t believe this” factoids, anecdotes and ideas. Tom Vanderbilt addressed odd and counter-intuitive concepts in Traffic – and did so again in You May Also Like. But it’s also a topic that drives our economy – and our lives. Arguably, our very identity nowadays is just a bundles of tastes. Taste is one of those highly abstract topics that gets really weird and really “meta” – very quickly. My choice to pick the book up could have been an anecdote in the actual book – “why did I choose to read that book when the topic didn’t suit my usual reading habits?” I picked up You May Also Like: Taste in an Age of Endless Choice by Tom Vanderbilt solely because of his excellent book – Traffic. ![]() ![]() ![]() It was during his time at Cambridge that he met the eponymous Derek Parfit OE, whom the annual lecture honours. This novel features Reynolds writing multiple versions of the same story but changing the genre each time. Coade is a ship’s physician on his first voyage. With the help of Coronel Ramos and Ada Cossile, Silas begins to understand what’s happening to him.Įversion is a first person point of view novel that focuses on Dr. Some of the crew members act as if there’s more going, but Silas is the other one who begins to notice how events are repeating. Bits of the other expeditions resonate with Dr. This expedition also meets disaster, and we next meet Silas aboard an airship descending down the fissure into the earth. Coade aboard a steamship, poised to find the fissure down by Antartica. Unfortunately, disaster strikes the expedition. ![]() Coade, however, has hit an impasse and can’t take his story forward. These tales are of a steam ship on a similar journey. He supplements his day with an opoid snuff and writing fanciful tales. This is his first voyage, and he’s not handling well. ![]() The shipboard surgery is successful, and the crew celebrates Coade’s accomplishment. A French trephination tool is secured to his patient’s skull, and he drills. Coade as he has to drill into one of the crew’s skull. The ship he’s on, Demeter, is a wooden sailing vessels headed up north along the fjords to discover a fissure and, beyond it, an Edifice.
